Deals from £100k to £10m

I act on deals with a purchase price between £100,000 and £10 million. Most are share purchases and sales of owner-managed UK companies; I also act on asset purchases and asset sales. If your deal is outside that range, ask anyway and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right fit.

How I work

Hands-on, from first call to completion

I lead every deal personally, supported by my team. I explain each stage in plain English, tell you what matters and what does not, and stay closely involved until completion and the filings afterwards. Property, employment and tax points are handled with colleagues at Kingsley Wood, and I work alongside your accountant and lender.

Sectors I act in most

I act on deals across most trading sectors. These are the ones I see most often, each with its own legal points. I also act regularly on professional services, lettings agencies and technology businesses; the recent deals page can be filtered by sector.

Is this the right fit?

I am likely to be a good fit if:

  • You are buying your first business.
  • You own a business and want to buy another to grow it: a competitor, supplier, customer base or second site.
  • You are selling the business you built.
  • The purchase price is between £100k and £10m.
  • You want a solicitor who is closely involved, explains each step and is easy to reach.

A larger firm is usually the better fit for:

  • Private equity houses and investment funds running deals through their own deal teams.
  • Companies whose in-house legal team wants a large team of lawyers on each workstream.
  • Listed companies and large cross-border transactions needing advice in several countries.

If that is you, I am happy to say so on the first call.

Where I work

I act for clients across England, Wales and Scotland. Company law under the Companies Act 2006 applies across the UK, so share purchases of Scottish companies run in the same way; where a deal involves property in Scotland, I will tell you at the outset if a Scottish solicitor needs to be involved. Meetings are by phone or Microsoft Teams, so where you are makes no difference to how the deal runs. I am based in Manchester, and Kingsley Wood is in the City of London.

FAQs

Common questions

How much does a solicitor cost to buy or sell a business?

I quote a fixed fee for each deal before any work starts, wherever possible, based on its size and complexity. As a rule of thumb, for deals of £1m or more the fee is usually around 1% of the purchase price. For smaller deals I give you a fixed quote after a free initial call. The fees page sets out the starting prices, what is included and how payment works.

What size of deal do you act on?

Deals with a purchase price between £100,000 and £10 million, mostly share purchases and sales of owner-managed UK companies, as well as asset purchases and sales. If your deal is outside that range, ask anyway and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right fit.

Will I deal with you or with a junior lawyer?

I lead every deal personally, supported by my team. You speak to me about the decisions that matter, from the first call to completion.

Do you act for private equity firms?

My practice is built around first-time buyers, owner-managers and sellers of the business they built. Private equity houses running deals through their own teams are usually better served by a larger firm, and I am happy to say so on the first call.

Do I need to be in London?

No. I act for clients across the UK and meet by phone or Microsoft Teams, so where you are makes no difference to how the deal runs. I am based in Manchester, and Kingsley Wood is in the City of London.
